چکیده
A 78-year-old woman hospitalized for investigation of ascites presented with weakness, loss of appetite, fever, and chills. A complete blood count showed anemia, leukocytosis, and thrombocytopenia (hemoglobin, 8.5 g/dL; leukocytes, 27.5 3 10/L; platelets, 50 3 10/L). Peripheral blood smear demonstrated the presence of neutrophilia with left shift (promyelocytes, 0.3 3 10/L; myelocytes, 1.9 3 10/L; metamyelocytes, 2.2 3 10/L; band neutrophils, 2.2 3 10/L; and segmented neutrophils, 19.7 3 10/L) and distorted granulocytes containing toxic vacuoles and intracellular structures that exhibit a uniform and definite rod shape (arrows), suggestive of phagocytized bacilli (panels A-B). Blood cultures confirmed the blood smear findings and revealed the presence of 2 species of bacillus, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

A 65-year-old man was brought to the ER for altered mental status for 12 hours. At ER, the patient was lethargic with hyperthermia. The laboratory studies revealed intravascular hemolysis with anemia, hyperkalemia, and elevated LDH. The abdominal CT showed liver abscess with marked aerobilia. Respiratory condition deteriorated rapidly, necessitating intubation. A massive amount of blood exuded ...
متن کاملAntibiotic Resistance of the Isolated Bacteria from Blood Cultures of Cancer Patients
Abstract Background and Objective: One of the main causes of increased mortality in cancer patients is bacteremia. On the other hand, antibiotic resistance is the major cause of treatment failure in malignant diseases especially in hematological malignancies. The aim of this study was to diagnose the bacterial strains isolated from blood specimens of cancer patients and to determine their antib...
متن کاملAn outbreak of atypical dermatophilosis mixed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa in a sheep herd after dipping

A great economic loss can be caused by this disease because of its effect on the quality of wool. In Iran (near Saveh), there was an outbreak of the disease in a herd and the clinical manifestation was different from that of typical dermatophilosis. Diffuse wide alopecic area accom...
متن کامل2-Microglobulin-Dependent Bacterial Clearance and Survival during Murine Klebsiella pneumoniae Bacteremia
Klebsiella pneumoniae is a leading cause of both community-acquired and nosocomial gram-negative bacterial pneumonia. A significant clinical complication of Klebsiella pulmonary infections is peripheral blood dissemination, resulting in a systemic infection concurrent with the localized pulmonary infection. We report here on the critical importance of 2-microglobulin expression during murine K....
